May07,My wife near earthquake in LAOS ~ too close for comfort

Regular readers ( thanks Mum!, only kidding lol) will know that my wife is in Thailand, this being the 2nd week of a 2 week holiday. Based in Pattaya, she then flew up for a few days in the North of Thailand in Chiang Mai (see MAP above).

I had a phone call an hour ago. Apparently they had just had earth tremors. She was on the 11th floor of the hotel, and the floors and walls moved and stuff fell off; everybody ran out of their room and made their way down outside. There were no further tremors and after a while and a beer, people started to return to what they were doing.

Scarey huh? Actually Ann-Maria said she had never been so scared in her life…..While she was on the phone I looked up Earthquakes and found the one that had just happened.

JUST 70 MILES AWAY, over the border in LAOS and 6.1 on the richter scale; it all happened at about 16:oo local time which was 10:00 am here in the UK, just a couple of hours ago.

WOW! Much too close for comfort.

Check it out on the earthquake site below: they are quick on the ball as I searched for this just an hour after it had happened

I hadn’t been too worried about her being away. She is with friends, one of whom lives in Thailand and is taking them out to places they wouldn’t normally see. But I’m now thinking 2 weeks is too long to be separated and I can’t wait for to be back on Saturday.

I hope all is well with you all; don’t take life for granted.

  1. Holy smokes, wow, she was very fortunate that she wasn’t nearer to the epicenter. I would have imagined that you would become lonely without her being by your side.

  4. O crumbs, Tina, that was a close one! So glad to hear that she’s unharmed and will soon be back in the arms of the one she loves.

  5. Oh my gosh, that would be my worst nightmare, being away from my spouse and hearing of a natural disaster in the area. Thank goodness she is okay; have you calmed down yet?

  6. We get a lot of earth tremours where I live, they are always scary, there’s hardly any old buildings in the town where I live as they were all flattened about 100 years ago by a biggie, and two years ago, a large one hit Murcia damaging properties, we felt the after shocks here!

  7. As Sharron says, pretty common here in Cali but a mag 6 is always interesting. I’m glad your wife is OK, Tina.

  8. Hi Calie, Thanks for stopping by.

As this was almost 3 years ago I had almost forgotten about it, but as with recent natural disasters you never seem far away from something. It is good to be reminded we are all mortal.

I wrote this on Yahoo 360 and it must have been harder to reply to comments, which I try to do now. It is always nice to have people recognise what you write as the blogger, but it is a two-way process, so thanks again for commenting.

And if OK, I have linked to your blog so I can catch up on what you are doing these days

    Hugs Tina x
